Although the process to create multiple partitions on a removable drive involves a number of steps, it's not complicated. You only need to erase the drive and set up the new storage layout.

Erasing a flash drive

To clean a removable flash drive using Disk Management, use these steps:

  11. In the 'Value label' field, type a descriptive name for the drive.
  12. Check the Perform a quick format option.
  13. Unless necessary, clear the Enable file and folder compression option.
  14. Click the Next button.
  15. Click the Finish button.

  16. Right-click the remaining Unallocated space, and select the New Simply Value option.

  17. Click the Next button.

  18. Under the 'Simple volume size in MB' section, specify the amount of space that you want to allocate for the second partition. (If you're only creating two partitions, you don't need to change this setting.)

  19. Click the Next button.

  20. Use the 'Assign the following drive letter' drop-down menu to select a letter for the new drive.

  21. Click the Next button.

  22. Use the 'File system' drop-down menu, and select the NTFS option (or the file system that you want to use).

  23. Use the 'Allocation unit size' drop-down menu, and select the Default option.
  24. In the 'Value label' field, type a descriptive name for the drive.
  25. Check the Perform a quick format option.
  26. Unless necessary, clear the Enable file and folder compression option.
  27. Click the Next button.
  28. Click the Finish button.

After completing the steps, you'll end up with a USB flash drive that includes multiple partitions and different file systems (depending on your configuration), so you can use the drive on different OSes without worrying about compatibility or to keep content separate.

  1. Open Control Panel.

  3. Click on BitLocker Drive Encryption.

  5. Click the Turn on BitLocker option.

  6. Check the Use a password to unlock the drive option.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Click on This PC from the left pane.

  3. Under the 'Devices and drives' section, double-click the encrypted drive (the one with the lock icon).

  4. Type the BitLocker password.

    Quick tip: If you can't remember the password, click the More options link, click the Enter recovery key option, and type the 48-digit recovery key available in the text file that you should have saved when setting up BitLocker.

  5. Click the Unlock button.

  2. Windows doesn't allow seeing partitions on removable media (USB, SD card, etc.). One way to make this possible is to modify the driver. Here is an example on how to do it for
    a USB drive, but I think it could also be used for an SD card. One needs to download a
    Hitachi filter driver for removing the Removable Media Bit - xpfildrvr1224_320.zip
    By modifying the included INF file the filter driver can be used with any other
    'removable' drive.
    For the device detection there are the lines in section [cfadisk_device]:

    %Microdrive_devdesc% = cfadisk_install,IDEDiskIBM-DSCM-11000__________________________SC2IC801

    'IDEDiskIBM-DSCM-11000__________________________SC2IC801' is the device ID of one of the supported Microdrives.
    In analogy to these lines we add one line for each 'removable' USB drive we want to turn into a USB hard drive.
    The ID is found in the Windows device management: Expand 'Disk drives', right click your USB drive,
    select Properties. On the tab 'Details' under XP the item 'Device instance ID' is already selected.
    Click on the ID in the List and press Ctrl+C, this copies the ID into the Windows Clipboard and can be pasted
    somewhere else with Ctrl+V.
    XP up to SP1 shows the tab 'Details' only when the environment variable DEVMGR_SHOW_DETAILS=1 is set:
    DevMgr_Show_1.reg download and doubleclick the file, then relogon to take effect.

    In the last line of the INF file we change 'Hitachi Microdrive' into something nice as 'RemovableToFixed'.

    In the device manager again right-click the USB drive, 'Update driver..', then 'No, not this time' -> Next ->
    'Install from a list or..' -> Next -> 'Don't search.' -> Next -> 'Have Disk' -> browse to the INF file here.
    Now 'RemovableToFixed' should be in the list -> Next -> Confirm the two warnings -> Finish.
    Now the drive is redetected, actually as USB hard drive. The drive can be partitioned, the policy
    'Optimize for performance' indeed activates a write cache on FAT formatted drives and Windows will create
    the beloved folder 'System Volume Information'..
