Let’s say you want to store sensitive files on a flash drive, or maybe send it out via email, or whatever the case may be. You’ll probably want to encrypt that file.

There’s a bunch of apps ( free or paid ) that can do that for you, but there’s also an easy way to do that using a built-in Mac app… the terminal.

Files need this app to decrypt files encrypted by Encrypt Files. The options Tab allows you to set the name that will appear on the Local Area network to other Users using Accessory Software apps.

1. Open Terminal

2. Type openssl enc -aes-256-cbc -e -in *path-to-file-you-want-to-encrypt* -out *path-to-where-the-encrypted-file-will-be-saved*

NOTE: You can drag and drop the file you want to encrypt instead of manually typing in the path. You can do it again for the output encrypted file, but change the name of the file ( i.e from pdf.pdf to output.pdf ).

3. Type in the password for your encryption ( you will not be able to see what you’re typing )

4. That’s it, your encrypted file is now saved, and you can’t open it without decrypting it first.

Now let’s see how to decrypt the file…

1. Open up terminal

2. Type openssl enc -aes-256-cbc -d -in *path-to-file-you-want-to-encrypt* -out *path-to-where-the-encrypted-file-will-be-saved*

3. Type in the password, and you’re done

Let’s recap… Here we’re encrypting a .pdf file. The .pdf is saved on the desktop and the encrypted file will also be saved on the desktop.

1. openssl enc -aes-256-cbc -e -in /Users/murdafsm/Desktop/pdf.pdf -out /Users/murdafsm/Desktop/output.pdf ( note that i changed the file name for the output )

2. Mac drag and drop app. Type in the password twice and I’m done.

Let’s decrypt the file…

1. openssl enc -aes-256-cbc -d -in /Users/murdafsm/Desktop/output.pdf -out /Users/murdafsm/Desktop/output1.pdf ( note that i changed the output filename again )

The zip command that it is using includes in your Mac does not actually have the way for you to encrypt zip files without having to use a third-party application.
Because of this, we have the Keka, which seems to be one of the most useful file compression and decompressing application that you can have for your Mac. However, Keka does not actually use AES for you to encrypt your zip files by default. What you need to do is to get the beta version of Keka for you to be able to do this. Or you can also use the standard version and make encrypted 7z files. All you have to do is to follow the guide below.

1. Go ahead and launch Keka on your Mac.
2. After that, go ahead and chose 7z and then enter the desired password on your archive.
3. Once that you are done with the password, go ahead and drag and drop one or more files that you would want to compress towards the Keka window. They will then be able to compress into 7z file encrypted with the password that you have just entered.

1. Windows – 7-Zip

The Windows operating system actually has a built-in way for you to be able to make a zip file. Some even offer to password protect and encrypt the zip files that you have. Now if you would want to password protect your zip files, then the 7-Zip is recommended for you.
Using the 7-Zip, you will be able to choose some files in your File Explorer or from your Windows Explorer windows. And after that, go ahead and right-click on them and then choose 7-Zip. After that, go ahead and choose to add to the archive. Here all you have to make sure is that you have selected the “Add to archive” option. The 7-Zip also lets you create a 7z archive by default. Or you can also have the option to choose Zip.
